Knights Kicking Into Gear

Written By Andrew Riddle

The Legacy Christian Academy varsity soccer programs have been doing exceptionally well this season. The Lady Knights are coached by Sharon Leach and assisted by Susy Combs, Todd Ramey, and Adam Robinson, and led on the field by senior captains Alyssa Free, Katie Leach, and Abby Harmon. They are off to a fantastic start with their first win coming in thrilling fashion when Alyssa Free blasted a shot with her left foot into the back of the net in the final minute, giving the Knights the 1-0 victory. The Knights currently sit in second place in the Metro Buckeye Conference standings with a 6-2-0 (win-loss-tie) record. Sophomore Rachel Harmon, Katie Leach (Sr), and Alyssa Free (Sr) lead the team with four goals each (currently tied for fourth place among the league leaders), and Harmon is also tied for third place in the league with four assists. When asked about how she felt about the tough upcoming games against several conference rivals, Alyssa Free said, “I think our team will do better against teams like Troy and Dayton Christian than we have in past years, but they will still be tough games! I am looking forward to seeing how we will do in the upcoming weeks.”

The Men’s Varsity team is loaded with talent this season with all but one starter from last year returning and several very skilled underclassmen stepping into starting roles. The Knights are coached by first year head coach Pete Burban, and assisted by Brett Stanley along with Joey McCaskey, and led by senior captains Jonathan Riddle, Josiah Entner, Ty Mcentrye, and Thomas Walquist. The Knights starting lineup consists of two freshmen, two sophomores, one junior, and six seniors, including 4 sets of brothers! The Knights currently sit in second place in the Metro Buckeye Conference standings, with a record of 6-1-0. The Knights back line has been playing stout defense to begin the year, allowing only two goals. Likewise, after a slow game in the only loss of the season, the offense has proven to be a dominant force scoring forty-eight goals in six games. As the men’s season kicks into full gear all eyes look to the October 1st matchup against conference leader Troy Christian. After tying TC last year, the Knights are feeling confident about their chances against one of the top teams in the state. When asked about his senior season, captain Jonathan Riddle said, “I think we are really good this year. It was a little different just because of the new coach this year, but we are starting to get to know him and adapting to the style of play he likes to use. We have a lot of talent and we are looking forward to seeing how we do when we play teams like Dayton Christian and Troy Christian.” (Boys Conference Standings) (Girls Conference Standings)
